“Since I’ve been with SISTERS, I have better self-esteem and my life is going in the right direction. I see that all the program and education has helped me to give my children and family good information that they need. All promotoras I work with are my family as well an always have there arms wide for me and everyone else.”

-“Gloria”

Promotor@s are our community health advocates, encouraged to draw from their own cultural wisdom, innate strength and comprehensive training to teach families, neighbors and co-workers about health promotion, risk reduction and health care access.

As already trusted members of the Latino community, our promotoras are effective “messengers” of culturally-appropriate health education and behavior adaptation based on the proven “stages of change” model.

Promotor@s develop leadership skills during their rigorous 40-hour training that covers cultural awareness; human sexuality; STD’s and HIV/AIDS; domestic violence; substance abuse; harm reduction; client advocacy; curanderismo and other culturally relevant practices. Promotora training is FREE; babysitting is provided; and Spanish-speaking group training is available.

As in all Sisters’ programs, the holistic needs of promotoras are addressed:

Mind - The Promotor@ training challenges participants to learn themselves and teach others, equipping them with tools to not only be healthy, but to change public policies that impact the health and well-being families and communities.

Body - Promotor@s take charge of their own health and empower others to do the same, sharing knowledge about prevention and treatment of STD’s, HIV, domestic violence, substance abuse, diabetes and birth control.

Spirit - Promotor@s grow spiritually by helping themselves and others break cycles of violence, poverty, injustice, ignorance and hopelessness–resulting in empowerment and inspiration for commitment to the future.
